How Treatment Works

Your WorkCover and TAC treatment pathway

01

Injured at work or in a transport accident

A work injury and a transport accident injury sit under two different Victorian schemes, WorkSafe for work injuries and the Transport Accident Commission for transport accidents. The clinical pathway is much the same in both. You are assessed, a treatment plan is set with measurable goals, and your progress against those goals is recorded and reported through your program.

Our physiotherapists treat the injuries these patients usually present with, including back and neck strains, shoulder injuries, knee injuries, lifting and manual handling injuries, whiplash, fractures after a period of immobilisation, and post surgical rehabilitation. Treatment is built around returning you to your normal duties and your normal life, at a pace your injury allows.

Starting physiotherapy on a WorkCover claim

Where there is an accepted WorkSafe claim, you can start physiotherapy for the work related injury without a referral from a medical practitioner. You can book straight in and begin treatment.

Once treatment has started, your physiotherapist completes an Allied Health Recovery Management Plan and submits it to your agent. It sets out the goals, the strategies, the expected outcomes and the timelines for your treatment, and it includes your baseline measurements and a psychosocial risk screening questionnaire. Your plan is then reviewed and updated as your capacity changes.

Starting physiotherapy on a TAC claim

If you have a TAC claim number, you can access physiotherapy immediately after a transport accident without a referral from a medical practitioner. Physiotherapy for transport accident injuries can commence within the first 90 days after the accident on that basis.

To continue treatment beyond that first 90 day period, your physiotherapist submits an Allied Health Treatment and Recovery Plan to the TAC. Outcome measures are recorded through your program and provided to the TAC on request, so attending your scheduled reviews is the simplest way to keep your treatment moving without interruption.

What your first appointment involves

Allow around 40 minutes. Your physiotherapist takes a full history of the injury, examines the affected area, explains what they have found and starts treatment where it is appropriate. Baseline measurements are taken at this appointment, because both schemes are built around measured change rather than opinion. You leave with a written program and a clear next step, and your treatment plan is prepared and submitted for you.

Measured progress, not guesswork

All three clinics use VALD force plate and dynamometry equipment to measure strength, balance and movement. Testing produces a recorded number rather than an estimate. On a WorkCover or TAC injury that matters twice over. It tells your physiotherapist whether the program is working, and it gives your plan the objective baseline and outcome data the scheme asks for. Your results are explained to you at the time of testing and repeated through your program, so you can see the change for yourself.

Return to work planning

Getting back to work is part of the treatment, not something that happens after it. Your physiotherapist works to your current capacity, communicates with your employer, your GP and your case manager where your plan requires it, and structures a staged return around the duties you actually perform. Strength and conditioning work is completed in the rehabilitation gym at your clinic, so the loading you need to tolerate at work is rehearsed under supervision before you go back to it.

Gym access at your clinic is arranged with your physiotherapist as part of your rehabilitation program.
